Furniture is often oddly shaped and won’t fit in a regular box. If you’re moving and need to ship furniture, it’s critical to work with a delivery company you trust to handle the transport safely. Here’s some advice to ensure your items arrive intact.

How Should You Ship Furniture?

1. Bag the Mattress

Mattresses are absorbent. Always pack them in a large mattress bag and shipping box to prevent moisture from soaking into the fabric and protect them from losing shape in transit. Follow the same procedure for box springs.

2. Disassemble What You Can

It’s easier to fit these items onto a truck and through standard doors when they don’t have legs sticking out. Unscrew headboards from the rails to ship a bed without worrying about breaking it.

3. Empty Furniture

If you’re shipping storage pieces with a delivery company, don’t send them full of books or other items. Empty dresser drawers, cupboards, cedar chests, and other storage items to make the furniture easier to move. Stash these loose belongings in boxes to ship separately.

4. Reinforce Packing Materials

Roll up rugs and tape them shut, running the tape around the rolls once or twice to keep them from unfolding. Then, place each rug in a long, skinny piece of plastic or rug bag to protect them from absorbing liquids or scents in transit. Place high-value flooring covers in rug boxes to add extra security and prevent them from bending.

Use thick cardboard and tissue or bubble wrap to safeguard art, photographs, or frames. Wrap chair legs that can’t be removed with bubble wrap and cushion the space between the legs with balled up tissue paper before placing the piece in a crate.

5. Pay Extra Attention to Heavy Items

Belongings that weigh a lot like safes or large instruments will require palletized freight boxes made with stapled or stitched cardboard. Fill empty spaces with engineered foam or other dense cushioning that won’t smush when exposed to the weight of the items. Seal off the container with reinforced tape, covering any seams.
