Pets are a part of the family, and the pain of their passing can be just as potent as the loss of any human loved one. In the years after their passing, the anniversary may be especially painful. Here is some advice for coping and planning a pet memorial.

Grief & the New Normal

Your pet likely played an important role in your everyday life and special occasions. Their passing required you to adapt to a “new normal.” While time can help you heal, it’s natural to continue to feel grief and subsequent emotions, such as guilt, anger, and sadness, for some time after their death. These feelings may be particularly strong near the anniversary of their passing.

Remind yourself that your beloved friend would want you to be happy and carry on, and commend yourself for what you’ve accomplished despite your grief. Be gentle with yourself, and accept grief as a part of the journey.

Honoring Their Memory

There are no right or wrong ways to approach the anniversary. You might visit their gravesite or have a pet memorial. Consider inviting others who loved your pet to say a few words or reminisce.

You can write a letter to your pet, compose a song or story about them, draw a picture, or make a scrapbook of photos. Journaling can also be a therapeutic, private way of remembering your pet.
