Barbecues and fireworks have long been parts of Fourth of July celebrations. For most pets, however, the noise can be stressful and too much to bear. Busy parties can also accidentally expose them to toxic materials, so it’s no wonder that many pet owners choose to take their furry friends to a pet boarding center during this holiday. Here’s some advice on how to keep your pet safe throughout the festivities.

Do:

Keep citronella candles away from them.

Citronella candles are effective in warding off pests during barbecues. However, citronella can be toxic to cats and dogs.

Also, the smoke from the candle can cause breathing issues. If they ingest the candle, it could lead to stomach cramping.

Ensure your pet’s information is up-to-date.

Don’t:

Use fireworks around pets.

Cats and dogs hear at much higher frequencies, so loud noises can be stressful and, possibly, even painful to them. Keep them at home instead of taking them to a fireworks show. If you have neighbors who are fond of using fireworks, consider taking your furry friend to a pet boarding center for the day.

Leave alcohol, food, or toxic products lying around.

If you’re hosting a party, keep alcohol and food away from pets. Alcoholic drinks, as well as ingredients like onions, grapes, and chocolate, can be poisonous to them. Also, keep toxic products like sunscreen and insect repellent out of their reach.
