4 Oral Care Tips for Teens, Onalaska, Wisconsin

Oral hygiene includes some basic principles that apply to everyone, including brushing and flossing twice a day. There are also special considerations for young people. If you have a teenager in the family, use this guide to help them build healthy oral care habits.

A Brief Guide to Oral Hygiene for Teens

1. Diet

Foods high in sugar, including candy, baked goods, and soda, lead to cavities. A teenager should only consume up to 6 teaspoons of sugar a day.

For optimal oral health, ensure your child has a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables. Throughout the week, prepare meals with tooth-friendly ingredients, including calcium-filled dairy and vitamin-rich leafy green vegetables.

2. Piercings

While oral piercings may look cool, they increase the risk of dental chipping. Piercings can also lead to infections.

If your child has a tongue, cheek, or other mouth piercing, encourage them to use alcohol-free mouthwash to eliminate bacteria after brushing. Not playing with the metal also helps prevent problems.

3. Flossing

oral hygieneBrushing twice a day helps remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth, but flossing is also required for the best results.

Flossing removes plaque and food particles between the teeth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Remind them to hug each tooth with floss in a “C” shape, gently working the string down to the gum line to remove all accumulation.

4. Sports

If you have an athlete in the family, help them protect their teeth and mouth from trauma.

In contact sports, helmets help prevent dental chipping during impacts and falls. Mouthguards are also recommended, especially for football and hockey. If your child has an oral piercing, they should remove it before contact sports.
