Whether you’re upgrading the bedding or you’ve simply been holding onto old blankets, sheets, and pillowcases for too long, decluttering is an important process to keep the home clean and organized. While upcycling is an excellent way to make room for new items, how do you know what to get rid of? Utilize the following four tips to decide what bedding accessories to keep and which to donate.

Top Tips for Decluttering Sheets & Pillowcases

1. Assess the Quality

When going through old sheets, pillowcases, and blankets, examine the quality of each item carefully, looking for any worn spots, stains, or tears. Make a pile for any linens that are still in good shape and another for any articles that are damaged.

Even if you find defects in some, upcycling material for new purposes around the home can bring new life to fabrics, such as DIY curtains, a living room tent for the kids, or lovely cloth gift wrap. Also, donating to a center is still possible since many damaged goods can be repurposed through textile recycling or alteration.

2. Consider Excess

upcyclingAnother simple way to determine what you need to get rid of is to count the sheets, blankets, and pillowcases you have. If there are twice as many sheets as there are blankets, consider giving the extras to a donation center to make more room in the linen closet.

Backups of each item are good to have on hand for laundry day, and it’s wise to make sure each season is covered if you live in a region with cold winters. However, you typically don’t need more than two to three extra sets.

3. Evaluate Your Style

Your linens may still be in impeccable shape, but if you’ve bought new pieces or simply outgrown your style, it’s a good idea to declutter. Take a look at your room, current tastes, and color scheme. If you find any bedding accessories that no longer match up with taste or decor, consider donating these to upgrade the overall look of your bedroom.
