When properly applied, mulch can suppress weeds, retain moisture, facilitate aeration, and enrich the soil as it decomposes. Commonly comprised of wood chips, shredded bark, or pine straw, it can also enhance aesthetic appeal. To ensure yours does its job, keep the following tips in mind.

How to Mulch Your Yard & Garden

1. Apply Preemergent Herbicide

Preemergent herbicides keep weeds at bay by inhibiting the seeds from sprouting. For optimal efficacy, spray them directly on the soil before you spread any mulch. If you apply preemergent after putting down layers of material, it won’t saturate the ground enough to control weeds once they start germinating.

2. Use the Right Amount

mulchToo much mulch inhibits drainage and aeration, so the underlying soil doesn’t get the water or oxygen it needs to support growing flora. Too little, on the other hand, fails to insulate the soil properly, making it too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

For virtually all plant species in Ohio’s climate, a 2-inch layer of mulch is ideal. To calculate how much you need to purchase, determine the total square footage of the area to be covered and multiply it by 2 inches. Divide the resulting figure by 324, which is how many inches 1 cubic yard of mulch covers. Round to the nearest whole number, and that’s how many cubic yards you should buy.

3. Compensate for Soil Issues

There are a number of organic materials that can serve as fertilizer as they decompose. Some of the most nutrient-rich mulches include grass clippings, leaves, and wood, so consider what your soil may be lacking when choosing which kind to spread.

Grass clippings have a high water content, making them perfect for the portions of the garden that don’t get much runoff. Hay, on the other hand, decomposes slowly to provide a steady supply of nitrogen and carbon all season long.
