Today’s windshields are a testament to automotive innovation, designed to act as structural support and protect you and your passengers at all times. Unfortunately, there are driving hazards that can cause cracks and breaks in even the strongest windshields. Here are the most common types of cracks, their causes, and whether they require a windshield repair or replacement.

A Guide to Different Types of Windshield Damage

1. Ding or Chip

One of the most common types of windshield damage is a chip or ding. These surface cracks are generally very tiny, caused by a small rock or object hitting the windshield at high speeds. A small piece of glass comes off to create the chip.

These windshield repairs are quick and easy, but if you do not get them fixed, they can crack and spread. In these cases, your windshield might need to be replaced.

2. Bullseye

A bullseye is a clean, circular break that occurs when a larger rock or object strikes the windshield. The name comes from its resemblance to a bullseye on a dartboard.

A windshield with this type of crack may be salvageable, as long as it is not too big. If it is large or too much glass has broken away, a complete replacement will be necessary.

3. Star Break or Burst

A starburst has a similar appearance, with the addition of spiderweb-like rays that surround the impact point. Depending on the size of the break, both can be repaired, but traces of the damage may still be visible.

4. Stress Crack

Older windshields tend to be weaker and incur damage more easily. Weather can play a major role in the production of stress cracks, especially with sudden, drastic temperature shifts.

Freezing and sweltering conditions weaken, or stress, your windshield. They can typically be fixed, but it is strongly recommended that you get a windshield replacement to prevent more stress cracks from forming.

5. Edge Crack

This type of crack starts two inches from the edge of your windshield and spreads rapidly. Some are caused by an object hitting the outer edge of the windshield, while others can happen when heat causes the glass to expand and contract.

Edge cracks span long, sometimes up to 12 inches. They are challenging to fill, and a repair will not always be guaranteed to restore your windshield's strength. A glass replacement will be your best bet.
