A summertime weather event, hail forms when water droplets in storm clouds undergo multiple freezing and thawing cycles before falling to the ground in chunks. Even small bits of hail can inflict vehicular damage because of the speed of their descent. Here, review what auto service experts want you to know about protecting your vehicle from these ice pellets.

Do:

Stay ahead of the weather.

Colorado has an especially active hail season from about April 15 to September 15. This is partially due to its high elevation—which means that frozen water in the sky has less distance to melt as it falls. Therefore, watch the weather report regularly or download a weather app during the summer to try and plan trips around hailstorms.

Take shelter.

If you know hail is coming, the best course of action is to park in a garage or under another sheltered parking structure. If your home doesn’t have a garage, consider investing in a carport. Failing that, purchase a hail blanket that you can place over your windshield to hopefully keep it from cracking. In an emergency, you can also use your floor mats.

Drive during a hail storm.

If your vehicle is moving when the hail hits, the impact is likely to be more severe due to added velocity. Therefore, if a hail storm catches you unaware, pull over.

If possible, park next to a large building that blocks the hail. If the ice pellets rain down from the east, for example, park on the west side of the building until the storm passes.

Let hail damage worsen.

If, despite your best efforts, your car sustains hail damage, schedule auto services as soon as possible. Allowing dents to worsen increases the risk of rust surrounding the contact point, which weakens body panels. This will cost more money to fix down the line. Additionally, putting off auto glass and body damage repairs also closes your insurance claim window.
