When the weather heats up, you and your family rely on an air conditioner to keep comfortable at home. With summer on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to assess your AC needs. There are two primary types of cooling systems, and understanding their differences can help you determine which works for you. Here’s what you need to know.

Traditional, Duct-Based Air Conditioning

Central air conditioning consists of a main unit, usually located directly outside the home, which generates cold air. The air is then pushed into different rooms of the home via ducts.

One benefit of central air is that it's inconspicuous. The ductwork is hidden in walls, while the cooling unit is outside. It can be noisy, however, and ductwork may leak, which may result in higher cooling costs.

Ductless Air Conditioning

air conditionerDuctless air conditioners consist of slim, wall-mounted units that push cool air directly into the rooms in which they reside. They are easy to install since they don't require an intricate, invasive network of ducts. They also operate quietly.

You need several ductless units to cool the entire home. However, this means you reap the benefits of being able to cool room by room, in zones. This saves money by addressing only the spaces you use.
