Both power washing and pressure washing are great ways to keep your property spotless. They both use highly pressurized water to remove built-up dirt, grime, and stains, and while the two are similar, there are certain distinctions that separate them. Understanding these differences helps to decide which is better suited to handle your upcoming cleaning project.

Pressure Washing

A pressure washer cleans various surfaces by blasting water out of a nozzle at extremely high pressures. Most come with a variety of interchangeable nozzles that change the width and shape of the water stream. Wider streams provide more coverage but less force, while a narrow stream is powerful but only covers a small area.

Regardless of what type of nozzle you are using, this washer dislodges debris and cleans surfaces using substantial pressure. They’re typically more compact and lightweight compared to a power washer, so pressure washers are easier to maneuver around the property while cleaning.

Pressure washers are ideal for removing non-greasy stains and debris from driveways, pavement, RV’s, boats, and a home’s siding. However, avoid using a pressure washer on asphalt shingles, windows, and painted surfaces, because the pressure of the water can actually damage them.

Power Washing

Power WashingPower washing serves largely the same function as pressure washing, but it has the added benefit of using heated water that is combined with a detergent solution. Power washers heat the water using either electric power or gas, which helps it clean hard to remove stains.

This is because the heated water can melt and corrode caked-on smudges. The washer also contains a thermometer, so you have control over how hot the water will get, depending on what type of stains need to be removed. Not only is it effective at dislodging debris and cleaning surfaces, but it’s also better suited to tackle stains than a pressure washer.

Power washers are perfect for removing grease and oil from asphalt paving and parking lots, removing weeds, mold, and mildew growing between paving stones, and getting rid of dried mud on sidewalks and patios. However, they are also more bulky and tough to move around with which makes large cleaning jobs a more difficult task.
