After moving into a new rental property, one way to acclimate to the apartment complex or community is to meet your neighbors. While the gesture is significant, you should strive to create an environment that is mutually pleasing and respectful. If you are new to a neighborhood, consider the following tips for establishing peaceful ties with others.

How to Be Respectful to Your Neighbors

1. Be Mindful of Noise

Whether you’re a single dweller in a rental property or have several roommates, observing general noise rules should be a top priority. Keep television and music at considerate levels. In apartment complexes, loud sounds will travel and can keep other tenants awake at night. It’s okay to have the occasional get-together, but frequent and over-the-top parties will create tension with nearby residents.

2. Respect Privacy

There’s a line between getting to know someone and intruding. As the newest tenant in a rental house or apartment complex, you should respect everyone’s privacy. When introducing yourself to others, identify if they are open to being cordial or want to make a new friend. If it’s the former, extend courtesy greetings when you see them. If it’s the latter, break the ice by asking about the best restaurants, grocery stores, and other spots in the neighborhood.

If housewarmings and other social gatherings are not your preference, don’t worry. A warm greeting on the way to work or a smile and acknowledgment makes an excellent first impression. If you remain friendly, others in the area will remember you and repay the favor. They are also more likely to offer assistance if you ask them.

4. Host a Housewarming Party

After moving in and settling down for a few weeks, you may be friendly enough with the neighbors to invite them to your new place. Post a flyer in a common area in the rental property, such as the gym or clubhouse. You can also go door-to-door to the neighbors on your floor and ask them when if they would like to join. Host the party in the late afternoon or early evening, as this allows everyone to come and return home before it is too late.
