Reliable HVAC systems are designed to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. However, since there are a variety of HVAC units on the market, it can be difficult to narrow down exactly what model you need. Below, learn about three setups you can consider, and how an HVAC service professional can help you to install them.

What Are the Varieties of HVAC Systems?

1. Split System

The most popular HVAC model is the split system, which contains an indoor unit consisting of the furnace and air handler. It also has an outdoor unit, which contains the air conditioning compressor. During the winter, the system uses the furnace and air handler to deliver heat throughout your house. During the summer, the system switches to use the outdoor air conditioning compressor and the indoor air handler, which runs warm air over indoor cooling coils to remove heat and humidity from your interior space.

Installing split systems can be complicated since an HVAC service professional has to vent your entire space and calculate the interior loads. These systems are easiest to install in new builds or in renovations where the sheetrock has been taken down since the ducting is typically installed within walls, ceilings, and floor voids.

2. Ductless Mini-Split System

HVAC ServicesDuctless mini-split systems do not rely on interior ducting, making them a great option for remodeling or smaller homes. Multiple ductless systems can be installed in one property, and are connected with a small line to an exterior compressor. Ductless systems can heat or cool and can be controlled easily with a handheld remote.

3. Geothermal System

Geothermal systems operate on the basis that the ground temperature remains relatively stable, even when the weather is especially hot or cold. These systems contain an electronically powered pump that shifts refrigerant from the interior space to the exterior space to dissipate or add heat.

During the summer, this simple unit uses refrigerant to absorb heat from inside your home and move it outside. During the winter, the cycle is reversed, and the system absorbs heat from the ground outside and moves it inside to warm your home.
