The electronic systems in modern vehicles include a number of sensors that are designed to communicate with the driver. When starting your car, you’ll notice the dashboard light up in an array of colors and hieroglyphics. If any of the symbols remain lit after the car has started, they could be warning you of a problem that requires immediate attention. If overlooked, minor issues could turn into major auto repairs. Here are some of the dashboard indicators you should be able to identify to help keep your vehicle in reliable condition.

4 Dashboard Lights to Know

1. Steering Lock

The steering lock is a theft prevention feature found in many cars. It will automatically activate whenever anyone tries to move the steering wheel without the keys in the ignition. A spring-loaded lever will become engaged, locking the steering wheel in place. This light, symbolized with a steering wheel and lock, should never come on while you’re driving, so if it does, have your vehicle inspected.

2. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

Anti-lock brakes give drivers better control of their vehicle and help tires keep a grip on the road, so they don’t skid when the brake pedal is pushed. If this symbol (the letters ABS circled in parentheses) is illuminated, it means the function has been disabled and your wheels are at risk of locking up should you brake hard. This can be dangerous, so have your car examined by an auto repair professional in a timely manner.

3. Check Engine

If this light, which is yellow and shaped like a motor, stays on, see a mechanic so they can run diagnostic testing and determine if auto repairs are necessary to prevent serious damage.

4. Airbag or Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)

Seat belts and airbags play a critical role in your safety while driving. This light, identifiable as a person wearing a seat belt with a circle in front of their face, indicates an issue with these components. If it’s on, there’s a possibility your airbags won’t deploy or the seat belts won’t tighten in a collision. It’s essential to have your mechanic figure out what’s causing this problem and fix it to restore full functionality.
