Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, you want your items to arrive at their destination in perfect condition. Antiques are particularly susceptible to damage, so proper preparation and packing protect them in transit. Follow the steps below to ensure your movers can safely carry and transport your older valuables.

5 Steps for Packing & Transporting Antiques

1. Create an Inventory

Begin by creating a thorough inventory of all your antique items, including their current condition and estimated value. Include photos of each item from all sides so you can document later damage if needed.

Check whether your homeowners insurance or mover’s insurance policy will cover damage to these items in transit. If necessary, get a supplemental insurance policy to cover the value of your belongings.

2. Clean & Disassemble

movingClean each item according to its material; there should be no dust or anything similar on it. Disassemble the larger pieces as much as possible. For example, unscrew the legs of a table or pack the drawer pulls on a dresser separately.

3. Protective Wraps

Wrap everything to protect delicate items from moisture and impact. Glassine is a wax-like barrier paper that works well protecting artwork or dishes. Wood furniture should be wrapped in moving blankets to prevent moisture from getting trapped against the furniture and warping it. Add corner protectors on your mirrors and artwork.

4. Box in a Perfect Fit

The boxes in which you put your items should fit as perfectly as possible. This keeps belongings from getting jostled in transit. Specialty boxes are available for unusually shaped items, such as artwork. Smaller objects can be packed in boxes together as long as they are carefully separated with foam. Fill empty spaces with air-filled plastic wrap.

5. Label the Boxes

Label the boxes as “fragile antiques” with arrows to indicate which end goes up. Mark them clearly in large, dark letters on every side. These boxes should be the last on and the first off the truck.
