Regular well maintenance is essential to keep your water supply flowing and to make sure it is safe for drinking. In between maintenance visits, you may also find you need water pump repair because the pump has been damaged or is showing signs of wear. Here are the signs it’s time to call a plumbing professional for well pump repairs or replacement.

When to Call for Well Maintenance

1. No or Low Pressure

If you turn on the tap and nothing comes out, it’s obvious there’s a problem. Low pressure could also be a warning sign — note how much water is flowing and see if it changes over time. Water that sputters and bubbles from the faucet can indicate clogged pipes or a worn-out pump.

2. Pump Noises

Well MaintenanceIf your pump is at ground level, check on it regularly. Try to learn how it normally sounds. Any change in the sound — such as getting louder, stuttering, or new humming, clattering, or grinding noises — means a change in the pump’s performance. Also, if the pump runs constantly and never shuts off, that indicates it’s struggling to keep up with demand or has a faulty sensor.

3. Water Contamination

This issue isn’t always caused by the pump, but it does mean you need well maintenance regardless. If your water is cloudy, contains sediment, or is tinted an unfamiliar color, you need a professional to find the source of the contamination. The pump or pipes may be corroded or leaking, or the system may be drawing in sand and debris due to a damaged or clogged filter. The issue could also be with the water supply itself.
