If you have a loved one who uses a wheelchair, kitchen remodeling may be a necessity. To fully satisfy their needs, consider their specific limitations, and how that impacts the usability of each part of the kitchen. Here are a few upgrades that will make this room more handicap-accessible.

How to Improve Kitchen Accessibility

1. Lower Countertops

The standard countertop height is at or slightly above 32 inches. This will be too high for someone who uses a wheelchair or needs to sit while preparing food.

If they only need a small section lower, you could have a drop leaf extension added, or you could have the entire space lowered. Either way, they’ll need counter space roughly the same height as their dining table.

2. Move Appliances

Appliances are often pushed to the back of the countertop. A handicap-accessible kitchen requires appliances to be easily reachable. Devices like microwaves and mixers could be positioned on lower countertops, while smaller appliances could be kept in pull-out drawers.

3. Install Floor Cabinets

4. Make Electrical Outlets Reachable

Light switches and outlets will need to be positioned so that they can be reached from a seated position. Your loved one will need to be able to operate the lights, exhaust fans, and plug and unplug any appliances they use.

5. Rethink Food Storage

You may also need to reorganize your food storage. Frequently used items should be placed in easily accessible spots like floor cabinets and low-mounted shelving. Any food in the refrigerator needs to be kept on lower shelves. A refrigerator with French doors and a bottom freezer is an excellent investment.
