Relocating to Alaska is a little more complicated than moving from one state to another in the continental United States. Among other differences, you’ll have to use an auto transportation service to get your car to your destination. Once your vehicle does arrive, you’ll be free to explore some of the state’s most beautiful scenic drives, including those listed here.

4 Picturesque Drives to Enjoy in Alaska

1. Hatcher Pass Scenic Drive

You’ll need a full day to enjoy this route, so you may not want to plan it for the same day that your auto transportation service delivers your car. Hatcher Pass Road will take you through the towns of Willow and Palmer before bringing you back to Anchorage. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful wildflowers, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and have the opportunity to stop for some skiing.

2. Matanuska Glacier Scenic Drive

On Glenn Highway, you’ll make your way through Palmer to Matanuska River Valley. There’s so much for your family to enjoy in the valley, including the Eagle River Nature Center. They offer nature walks up to three and five miles that will take you around Albert Loop to see 3,000-foot cliff faces and gushing crystal blue waterfalls.

Your family can enjoy adventure of another kind at the Musk Ox Farm. As you tour the property and learn about the near extinction of the species, you’ll be able to interact with more than 70 live musk oxen.

3. Sterling Highway

Auto TransportationWhen you drive north on the Sterling Highway, you’ll pass through Sterling Wye and onto Skilak Lake. The 38-mile drive will take you around Kenai Lake. The lake was formed by a melting ice glacier and has a mesmerizing blue-green color. As your family takes a self-guided tour, informational plaques will give you a history of the area.

Traveling southbound on Sterling Highway will bring you to the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is comprised of three volcanoes. They’re just the tip of a larger ring of 450 volcanoes.

4. Richardson Highway

The northbound portion of Richardson Highway takes you along 101 miles of scenic beauty, while going south will take you on a 128-mile drive. Traveling north, you’ll pass through Fort Greely and Fairbanks. This route will also take you to North Pole, where your kids can visit the Santa Claus House.

Driving south will take you through Valdez and onto Glenallen. You’ll enjoy views of Worthington Glacier and Copper River as well as Alaskan wildlife thriving in their natural habitats.
