There are a few different aspects to think about when it comes to lawn care, but taking the right steps will give you beautiful and healthy grass to enjoy. If you have a busy schedule or are not confident about the techniques, there’s always the option of professional lawn care. Knowing the tips below will help you to maintain your grass by yourself or decide when to call an expert.

4 Lawn Care Tips

1. Use Compost

Many items you might throw away can comprise compost that enriches your soil. Keep organic kitchen waste such as eggshells, coffee grinds, and vegetable leaves, along with grass clippings and other garden waste like plant cuttings.

Adding a layer of this decomposed material to your lawn will give the soil nutrients and help retain moisture. Compost can be used alongside fertilizer to ensure the soil and grass are both nourished, but contact a professional if you’re unsure when to apply them.

2. Mow the Right Way

Trimming too short makes the grass less resistant to weeds and drought and can make your lawn patchy. Don’t mow any shorter than 2 inches to be safe, and leave 3 inches if drought is a risk.

3. Aerate

Lawn aeration involves making small holes in your lawn to allow it to breathe and to let nutrients in. It also reduces soil compaction. Remove plugs of soil about 3 inches deep and spaced 3 inches apart; do this once or twice a year.

Most people don’t have aeration equipment, but if you are not hiring a lawn care professional and choose to do it yourself, it’s possible to rent the equipment.

4. Remove Weeds

Weeds make your lawn look much less attractive and also compete with the grass for nutrients. Removing weeds means either digging them out or using a herbicide, generally known as weed killer.

If you dig them out, remove the whole weed—including the roots—or it could grow back. Fill in the gaps with compost and lawn seed so grass can grow there instead. Weed killer should be used carefully so that only the weeds are removed, and no other greenery is damaged.
