A swimming pool provides a space to relax, enjoy time with friends and family, and exercise. Part of swimming pool maintenance involves adding chlorine to the water. Learn more about the purpose of this product in this guide.

Common Questions About Pool Chlorination

Why is chlorine necessary?

A naturally occurring chemical, chlorine kills germs and parasites that cause illness, including E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. Disinfection times vary for different products and organisms, often ranging from one minute to several days. Once applied, chlorine transforms into hypochlorous acid, which works in conjunction with ultraviolet (UV) rays to keep the water clean.

How much chlorine does my pool need?

swimming pool maintenanceThis depends on how many gallons of water the pool contains. Most require 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm), or 0.00013 ounces of chlorine, per gallon.

How much you need also depends on the type of product you select. Granular varieties are effective at lesser quantities than liquid ones, for example.

Does it create an odor?

Correct levels do not produce noticeable smells.

If you notice a chemical odor, chloramines may have accumulated due to insufficient swimming pool maintenance. Such issues occur when chlorine combines with sweat and body oils. Shocking the pool, or adding more chlorine than usual, kills these compounds to eliminate unpleasant odors.

How long should I wait before swimming after chlorination?

When you shock your pool, wait eight to 36 hours to swim. After routine service, you only need to wait for up to one hour.

Ensure the space is ready by checking the pH levels. If they’re around 7.4, you can enjoy the feature.
