Available in a range of colors and finishes, tile flooring is attractive and comes with many benefits. It is water-resistant and durable, but you must perform regular maintenance to keep these advantages. Below is a brief guide to ensure your tile flooring is shining.

How Often Should You Clean?

Tile floors require sweeping or vacuuming once a week. Additionally, you should mop the kitchen tiles every two weeks, while bathrooms need a wet mop once a week. Finally, scrub the grout every three to four months to remove any dust and debris accumulation.

Clean According to the Material

Tile FlooringTile flooring requires different cleaning solutions, depending on the material. For example, you can mop ceramic tiles with a mix of warm water and mild dish soap, while porcelain and vinyl tiles require a solution of water and vinegar. For slate or marble tiles, avoid any cleaners with a high-pH level, or ones containing vinegar or lemon. Instead, choose a solution with a neutral pH or one that the stone manufacturer recommends. You should also sweep slate and marble tiles with a soft-bristled broom to avoid scratches.

Regardless of the material, always do a brief sweep before mopping and be mindful of mop water while cleaning, as dirty water will streak the tiles. Because sponge mops can push dirty water into the grout lines, use a flat mop, chamois mops, or rag to clean tile flooring instead.

How to Remove Grout Stains

Gout is porous and gets dirty quickly. To start, apply a paste of baking soda and water and let it sit for a few hours. Then, scrub it with a toothbrush and rinse it with warm water before air drying. For particularly stubborn stains, use a toothbrush to apply a solution of warm water and bleach and then rinse with warm water. Be careful not to get bleach on the tile, as it can stain and discolor it. Always avoid using a metal brush to clean the grout, as it could leave abrasions and remove some of the material.
