Your sump pump installation protects your home from damage by directing water away from your home’s foundation. Over time, the pump may stop working, putting your property at risk of basement flooding, mold, and other related issues. To prevent these disasters, it’s recommended that you test your pump at least twice a year. If you’ve never tested it before or need a refresher, here’s a closer look to get you started.

Before You Test

Before testing the sump pump, inspect the exit pipe for dirt and other debris. If you find any, remove it. The exit pipe is responsible for draining water from the pump and directing it away from your home. If it gets clogged, the pipe won’t be able to transport the water, increasing your home’s risk of damage.

Once the pipe is clear, you’re ready to test the sump pump. The method you should use depends on whether the pump has two cords, which is most common, or just one.

Testing a Two-Corded Pump

sump pump installationA two-corded sump pump installation features a float cord and a pump cord. The pump cord plugs into the back of the float cord plug, which connects to the outlet.

To test this kind of sump pump, unplug both the float cord and the pump cord, and then plug the pump cord into the outlet. If the pump is working, you’ll hear a humming sound. Plug the cords back in as they were. If you don’t hear it, call a professional to inspect the unit.

Testing a Single-Corded Pump

If you have a single-corded pump, slowly pour about 20 liters of water into the pump until the float rises. Once it rises, the pump should turn on, drain all of the water, and turn itself off. Repeat the test to make sure the pump is in good working order. If it doesn’t turn on, schedule a service call with a technician.

If you can’t add water to the pump, test it by lifting the float arm and ensuring the pump turns on. To avoid damaging the motor, don’t let the pump run for more than a few seconds when using this test method.
