A skin cancer diagnosis should always be taken seriously, but certain types of cancers have different warning signs, treatment options, and outcomes. If you understand the various classifications, you may be better prepared to spot potential issues and easily navigate the skin cancer treatment options available. Here are a few of the most common types.

What Are the Different Types of Skin Cancer?

1. Melanoma

Melanoma is the most aggressive among the common forms of skin cancer. It occurs when there are mutations in the skin’s melanocytes, which are responsible for producing pigment. Early on, it often appears as an abnormally shaped mole or spot on the skin. It may also change color or shape over time. Melanoma is treatable, but early detection is key since it can potentially spread to other parts of the body.

2. Basal Cell Carcinoma

It consists of abnormal growth in the skin’s basal cells, which are those on the top layer of skin. This type of cancer often looks like bumps or scars on parts of the body that are frequently exposed to UV rays. The spots can eventually spread deeper into the skin and cause disfigurement, but this type of cancer is highly treatable when caught early.

3. Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cells are also located in the skin’s top layer, so this type of cancer occurs when the DNA is damaged in these cells. It normally appears as a rash or scaly patch on the skin. It is most common on sun-exposed spots, but can also occur elsewhere. Like basal cell carcinoma, it is highly treatable, but early detection is key.
