The moving process, whether local or out-of-state, starts long before you break out the moving boxes. If you strategize an efficient packing plan, you can reduce the amount of time and energy used by you and your moving company. Below are four tips to ease the packing process so you can enjoy a stress-free move.

4 Ways to Strategize Your Packing Plan

1. Clean Up Before Packing Up

First, go through your belongings to see if there are things you no longer want or need. Minimalizing your possessions will decrease packing time, create more space in your moving van or new home, and save you money spent on movers and boxes.

Remove clutter around the house by sorting your belongings into piles. Make a trash pile, a donation pile, a storage pile, and a packing pile. Discard the items to the appropriate trash and donation facilities and then give your moving company the boxes you know you are keeping.

2. Organize

moving company

Accumulate all of your packing supplies first.  Decide how many boxes you’ll need in order to save you from making extra trips. Label everything, as it’s difficult to remember which unmarked brown box is which by the time you move everything into your new home.

Make the boxes stand out by implementing color-coded stickers, marking them with sharpies, and using lots of tape. This organizational system will help you and your moving company handle each package accordingly.

3. Pack Room-By-Room

Packing your whole house can easily become overwhelming. Separate your packing plan by rooms and focus on one at a time. Begin with the rooms that you use the least, saving the kitchen for last as you will most likely utilize this space up until moving day.

If you slowly check rooms off your list, you will have far less to do when you are finally ready to pack up the moving van. You’ll also have an easier time unpacking if you keep your boxes from each room sorted into sections.

4. Remove Distractions

Plan for days of packing by clearing your schedule. You don’t want to start packing, have to get up for appointments or errands, and then come home and settle into packing again. It’ll take less time to finish if you schedule specific packing times.

Ask your friends or local family members to help you pack or watch the younger kids and pets. You can quickly finish the work with a few extra pairs of helping hands.
