Finding fun activities for your children doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. If your driveway is made of asphalt paving, there are many ways to keep them engaged without leaving home. Here are three games for them to try out.

Common Games Children Can Play on Asphalt Pavement

1. Hopscotch

This universal game is easy and enjoyable for children of all ages. To play, draw a game board with chalk. This board should start with one square, followed by two squares drawn side by side right above it. This pattern should continue until you have drawn and numerically labeled nine squares. Afterward, create a half-circle above squares eight and nine.

Each player chooses a place holder. This can be a beanbag or a rock. One player then throws their place holder on the game board. Then, they hop on the board using one leg for rows with single squares and two legs for rows with squares placed next to each other.

Asphalt PavingWhen they reach their place holder, they must jump over it. The player then turns around, picks it up, and hops back to square number one. Players who step on the lines or throw their place holders outside of the lines forfeit a turn.

2. Four Square

Four square is a simple game that requires chalk and a ball that bounces. Draw a large, six-foot square and divide it into four equal sections. Four players will then stand separately in each section.

One player can then bounce the ball toward one of the other squares. The player standing in the receiving square must hit the ball to another person. If the ball doesn’t land within a square, the player who served it is out. The game continues until there’s one player left.

3. Jump Rope

Jump rope is a game that can be played without drawing on the asphalt pavement. It is also versatile, as it accommodates one or more players. If your child is jumping rope by themselves, all they have to do is hold the rope behind them with one handle in each hand. They can swing the rope and jump over it when it reaches the pavement.

To jump rope with multiple players, have two people hold each end of the rope with one hand and stand facing each other at least six feet apart. Additional players must stand on one side of the rope while it’s on the ground. The two people holding the rope then use a circular motion to turn the rope in unison as the other players jump over it.
