It’s always smart to be prepared, and a generator is one of the handiest tools to keep you ready for a power outage. While this device can last for years and be a big help when the power goes out, it still needs to be taken care of properly. Here are some maintenance tips to follow.

How to Keep Your Generator in Top Shape

1. Run It Every Three Months

While you may only reach for it during power outages, it’s wise to run it every three months for a few minutes. Doing so ensures it’s still working, and allows oil to circulate throughout the engine and keep the components lubricated.

2. Stock on Oil & Filters

While oil helps stop the motor from overheating, the air filter protects components like the piston rod and valve gear from air impurities. Keep at least three spare filters and three refills of oil on hand at all times in case you’re without power for an extended period.

3. Use Heavy-Duty Cables

generatorsHeavy-duty cables allow the unit to work with lower voltage, while lighter cables will increase it. To maintain your unit and ensure it doesn’t get overworked and burnt out, invest in quality cables.

4. Keep It Fueled Up

A generator can continue running for a short period even after the gas runs out. However, before it shuts off, the electrical load of what it’s powering can drain the coils’ magnetic field. To avoid needing your coils re-energized, make sure the unit has plenty of fuel.

5. Use New Gas for a Cool Motor

Old gas can be almost as bad as no gas, as the liquid may develop impurities which could diminish performance and fail to lubricate the engine properly. Pouring fuel into the tank can cause the engine below to crack if it’s hot, which could present a fire hazard. Always make sure the unit has had time to cool before fueling.
