Preparing a home for custom wheelchair access can be an involved process depending on the current state of the property. Whether you need ramps installed or a more spacious bathroom, ensuring your loved one can move independently is essential to their well-being. If your home needs to be updated, make sure the following areas provide plenty of room and proper support.

How to Make Your House Wheelchair Accessible

1. Entryways

Your doorways need to be wide enough to accommodate a person in a wheelchair. The Americans with Disabilities Act designates the proper width to be 32 inches or more

Additionally, entryways should be free of steps or “lips,” which could prevent wheels from passing through. Traditional doorknobs should also be avoided, as levers and other handles are more comfortable when using one hand.

2. Ramps

Make sure that any ramps leading into the home are built to follow building codes. They’ll need at least 36 inches of space between the rails. Also, a safe slope should incline less than an inch for every foot of distance.

3. Kitchens

4. Floors

Every room in the house should have enough space for a wheelchair user to turn around completely, allowing them to enter and leave without bumping into furniture or walls.

They need approximately 60 inches in diameter, although some people may prefer more room. Rugs should be avoided, as they can make it challenging to move around.

5. Bathrooms

Accessible bathrooms should have walk-in showers, complete with seats and handheld showerheads. Using pedestal sinks instead of cabinet versions will provide enough space for people to fit their wheelchairs underneath. You should also install bars in and around the shower to provide support when needed.
