Stunning hardwood floors enhance any home, and since they’re built to last, you’ll get decades of use from them with the right maintenance plan. Here are a few helpful tips to add to your cleaning regimen.

How to Care for Hardwood Floors

1. Vacuum Often

Fine debris that has settled on your hardwood floor will grind the finish under foot traffic, so clean it regularly. Vacuum at least once a week—possibly twice a week in high-traffic areas—to remove debris. Invest in an appliance with an attachment or smooth beater brush that won’t damage the floor.

2. Use a Wood Floor Mop

Open a window or run a ceiling fan while you mop to help remove standing water.

3. Use a Safe Cleaner

Harsh chemical cleaners will break down the wood’s finish and may create stains. Try simple DIY cleaners instead.

A solution of equal parts warm water and vinegar will clean most messes, and you can add essential oils or dish soap to improve the smell. Adding a 3/4 cup of olive oil and half a cup of lemon juice to a gallon of hot water is another safe option.

If these don’t work well enough, contact a professional cleaning service for assistance.
