You probably know that a well-functioning septic system is essential to a sanitary and comfortable home. However, you may not be fully acquainted with all the different components that make up your system. The following information can be useful whether you’re in need of a new septic installation or repairs.

What Are the Different Components That Make Up a Septic System?

1. Septic Tank

Wastewater from your home is carried to your septic tank, which is buried somewhere on your property. Solid waste sinks to the bottom of the tank, oils create a scum layer on the top, and liquid waste is dispersed to the leach field. Tanks must be pumped on a regular basis to prevent leaks and overflows. Some tanks have only one compartment, while newer tanks often have two.

2. Leach Field

septic installationAlso known as the septic drain field, a leach field disperses treated wastewater back into the water table once it’s free of impurities. Pipes in the ground contain many small holes, which allow wastewater to penetrate the surrounding soil or gravel.

Leach fields should be kept free of heavy machinery and vehicles. Planting trees and shrubs in this area is also problematic, as roots may clog the perforated pipes in search of water.

3. Inlet & Outlet Baffles

The inlet baffle allows water to flow from the main sewer line of a home to the septic tank. It’s important that wastewater flows into the tank without affecting the scum layer, which contains fat, oil, soap scum, and other substances that are lighter than water. Conversely, the outlet baffle prevents solid waste from flowing out of the tank and into the leach field.
