Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens the density of your bones, making them easier to break. This “silent disease” is estimated to affect more than 200 million people. Whether you have suffered an osteoporotic fracture or want to be proactive about your bone health as you get older, you will likely have a lot of questions for your chiropractor.

Osteoporosis FAQ

Who is at risk?

Approximately 80% of cases affect women, and many of those are people over the age of 50. Menopause stops the production of estrogen, which protects the bones, so bone loss will occur more quickly after menopause.

You may be at a higher risk if you have a smaller body frame since your bones are lighter and thinner. You may also be at a higher risk if you have a family history of the disease.

What can I do to reduce my risk?

red wing chiropractorThere are lifestyle choices that can reduce your risk. Exercise regularly, ensure you get enough vitamin D and calcium in your diet (calcium at a young age is particularly important for women), and treat any hormonal imbalances. Do not smoke and reduce or eliminate your alcohol consumption.

How can I avoid fractures?

Brittle bones are at a significantly increased risk of fractures. Prevent falls or other accidents by taking care every day. Wear low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes and avoid walking around in socks.

Keep your home well-lit and install soft non-slip flooring, such as carpet. Put down a non-skid bathmat, install grab bars, and use a walk-in shower rather than a tub. Use a cane or walker if needed.

What type of treatment is available?

Treatment with bisphosphonates can help maintain bone density, especially when it is done in the early stages of the disease. You can work with your chiropractor to keep your spine aligned and bones properly supported, which will keep you stable.
