A custom wrought iron gate has classic beauty that brings a unique charm to your home. Since iron is highly durable, the structure lasts for decades. If your gate is a few years old, there are a few steps you can take to restore its original appeal. Use the guide below to bring the shine back to the metal in time for the summer.

How to Make a Wrought Iron Gate Look Brand New

1. Remove Rust

Over several seasons, snow and rain can affect the protective coating and lead to rust. If you see specks of corrosion, take action quickly to prevent it from spreading.

Use a wire brush or drill with a brush attachment to rub away all visible discoloration. Finish off by smoothing down residual bumps with sandpaper. Wash and dry following the steps below to rinse away dust, loose paint chips, and rust particles.

2. Clean

Mix a mild detergent with warm water in a bucket. Wash the piece with a sponge or power-wash using the mixture. For intricate pieces, use a small nylon scrubbing brush to tackle every crevice. Rinse the surface thoroughly and dry with a clean towel.

3. Paint

Before repainting a wrought iron gate, apply a primer. Make sure the product is specially formulated for iron and has rust-proof properties. Choose a spray primer for easier application. Apply at least two coats for maximum protection.

After the gate is prepared, touch it up with paint. Enamel paint is best-suited for iron. Like you did with the primer, apply at least two coats of spray paint. Your wrought iron gate will look as good as new once it dries.
