Swimming in a pool is especially refreshing during the hot summer months. Virtually all pools are treated with chlorine, which kills bacteria and other contaminants in the water. Although it’s beneficial for pools, chlorine has a negative impact on teeth. That’s why dentists warn against excessive chlorine exposure. Here’s what you can do to prevent damage.

How Chlorine Affects Your Teeth

Several things can cause your enamel to break down over time. Eating acidic foods and beverages, grinding your teeth, and brushing too harshly all contribute to enamel wear and increased sensitivity. Exposure to chlorine, especially when a pool is treated incorrectly, further damages the enamel.

The pH level in your pool is an important factor. A high pH level increases the water’s alkalinity, which can be just as damaging to the tooth enamel as acidic substances. Over time, teeth will become sensitive and porous. They also develop dark stains and discoloration as the underlying dentin shows through. Dentin, which is the layer directly under your tooth enamel, is a darker, yellowish color that appears as the enamel degrades.

What You Can Do to Prevent Issues

dentistMake sure you’re adding the right amount of chlorine to your pol. A pH of 7.4 is preferable, as anything lower or higher falls into the acidic or base categories, respectively. You can also choose an alternative method of sanitizing your pool, such as ozone purification or UV light sanitizing.

When swimming, keep your mouth closed as much as possible. If you’re a swimmer and experience increased sensitivity, schedule a visit with your dentist. They will able to assess the level of enamel damage and offer a solution. Scheduling a cleaning before the start of the swimming season is recommended, as fluoride treatments are used to strengthen enamel and fortify teeth.
