Routine auto maintenance can prevent breakdowns and other mechanical issues. In addition to changing the brake pads, rotating the tires, and aligning the wheels regularly, you need to care for the engine. Here’s some advice on auto engine upkeep.

Do:

Check coolant levels.

Since fuel combustion occurs in the engine, the surrounding metallic parts tend to get hot, potentially causing the engine to overheat. Coolant prevents temperatures from elevating.

Check coolant levels by popping the hood and looking at the reservoir on the upper right of the engine. If it’s below the full line, add more fluid.

Inspect the serpentine belt.

The serpentine belt runs between the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner, and water pump, providing the cranking power necessary for these components to run. When the serpentine belt breaks, these systems will shut down, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Check the belt for cracks and deterioration by looking under the hood. The serpentine belt sits to the left of the engine. In addition to performing a visual inspection, gently squeeze and twist the belt. If it cracks, splits, or frays, have an auto maintenance team replace it.

Don’t:

Forget oil changes.

oil changesMotor oil lubricates the mechanical parts within the engine to keep them moving properly and prevent wear and tear. Over time, motor oil collects dirt, dust, and debris as it makes contact with the internal components. Replace the oil once every three months or 3,000 miles to prevent impurities from burning.

Ignore the check engine light.

When the check engine light illuminates on the dashboard, don’t disregard it. The light could indicate anything from a loose gas cap, which is minor and simple to repair, to a misfiring engine, which may seriously damage the engine. Take the vehicle to an auto maintenance center to diagnose the issue as soon as you notice the light.
