Contact lenses are convenient and discreet. Since they’re placed directly over the eyes, you must take proper precautions to prevent infections and irritation. Below are several guidelines for preserving your health.

Do:

Keep them clean.

Clean the lenses daily to prevent bacteria from getting into your eyes, which could cause infections. Before touching the pair, wash your hands with soap and warm water. Store them in contact solution and wash the case each day.

Use fresh solution each time you store your contacts, as reusing the liquid or topping it off allows bacteria to accumulate.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Dispose of contacts after the recommended time frame. You should remove them before sleeping or napping unless the product and your doctor specify that wearing them in sleep is permitted.

Take out the pair before bathing, swimming, or entering hot tubs, as water can carry germs and debris.

Don’t:

Ignore eye irritation.

contact lensesRedness, itching, watering, and dryness are signs of eye irritation. Irritation can signal the beginning of an infection, or there could be dust caught under the lens.

These symptoms may also occur when products are worn past the recommended period or have become damaged. If irritation persists after you switch out the contact lenses, schedule an appointment at the eye doctor to rule out infection.

Buy without a prescription.

Eye exams test your vision to provide accurate prescriptions. They also identify conditions that indicate you may not be a candidate for lenses, such as chronic dry eye or pregnancy.

Avoid reusing old lenses, which can carry bacteria. When you need a prescription refilled, visit your eye doctor.
