Looking for new ways to enjoy your backyard this summer? Consider acquiring an above-ground pool where you and your family can entertain guests or enjoy peacefully floating under the sun. Most pools of this kind are made from vinyl, meaning that if there are any rocks, twigs, glass, or other objects on the ground underneath your setup, the bottom may get torn or punctured, resulting in leaks and a potentially-painful walking surface. Therefore, many homeowners invest in bulk sand to lay under the pool, cushioning it. The guide below explains what you need.

What Kind of Sand Should You Use?

Generally, masonry sand is considered the best kind to use as a foundation for an above-ground pool. Made of granite, gneiss, and limestone that has been crushed and then filtered to make sure the particles are a consistent size, it holds together well to support your pool without sinking or moving around. At the same time, it’s fine enough to be soft and pleasant to walk on since you can usually feel the ground through the bottom of the pool.

Concrete sand is usable too and is similar in composition, but is less uniform and contains some pebbles.

bulk sandHow Much Sand Will You Need?

Get enough bulk sand to create a two-inch bed. Since moisture makes sand heavier, place your order in cubic yards instead of by weight to avoid getting too little. Most above-ground pools tend to have a circumference of 15 feet and usually require two cubic yards of sand or, approximately, three tons. If your pool is bigger, use a reference chart for determining how much sand you need.

How Should You Apply the Sand?

Spread and dilute the sand in accordance with the contractor’s instructions, spray it with sand hardener and water, then distribute it evenly over the bed with a trowel. Once you spray on a finish coat, you can set up your pool.
