Tree planting boasts several benefits. During the summer, for example, shade from the trees can block the sun’s hot rays so everyone remains cool and comfortable. Their expansive canopies can also keep heat off the roof, helping lower energy bills. If you want more shade in your yard, below are a few different types of trees that will help you accomplish this goal.

3 Types of Trees for Ample Shade

1. Northern Red Oak

The northern red oak can soar to heights of 60 to 75 feet. The symmetrical canopy can spread from 50 to 60 feet, providing shade for a large yard. During autumn, the tree will fill your yard with pops of color as the green leaves transform into warm shades of red.

2. River Birch

River birch prefers damp soil and can adapt to acidic conditions. With full or partial sunlight, the plants can grow up to 70 feet tall. The spread can span up to 60 feet. After the tree planting, a layer of mulch should be placed around the base to help the soil lock in moisture. Small buds known as catkins develop during spring and into summer. Once the tree reaches maturity, the reddish-brown bark will peel.

3. Tulip Tree

The tulip tree gets its moniker from the shape of the leaves it produces. The tree typically grows between 70 and 90 feet tall, with a spread of 40 feet. Plant the tree in an area with direct sunlight and well-drained sandy or clay-based soil. The leaves turn yellow in the fall and flowers, also resembling the shape of tulips, form during May and June.
