Many people enjoy coffee, but few know the differences between everything on the cafe menu. Water, espresso, and milk are common ingredients in a coffee beverage; however, baristas can alter the proportions to craft a unique drink that suits your preferences. Here are the differences between a few beverages that commonly get mixed up.

Espresso & Drip Coffee

Drip coffee is made by pouring hot water over ground beans contained in a filter. The brewed coffee drips from the filter and falls into a cup. This process requires finesse, as water that’s too hot will scald the grounds and give the drink a bitter flavor.

Espresso is also made with hot water. The difference is that a machine is used to force the water through finely ground and tightly packed coffee. Espresso shots usually come in one or two ounces and can be enjoyed black or with some sugar or cream.

Iced Coffee & Cold Brew

espressoIced coffee is made by pouring regular hot coffee over ice. This beverage is usually brewed in stronger batches to account for the eventual watering down. Some people enjoy iced coffee black, while others prefer to tone down the acidity with cream or flavored syrups.

On the other hand, cold brew is made by steeping the grounds in cold or lukewarm water. This is a lengthy process that can last anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, as the grounds need time to saturate the chilled water. This gradual soaking results in a brew that’s more mellow and less acidic than traditional iced coffee.

Lattes & Cappuccinos

Order a latte if you prefer a creamy drink. This beverage can be made hot or cold, and it always contains an espresso shot at the bottom. The rest of the cup is filled with steamed milk, then topped with a thin layer of foamed milk.

While cappuccinos are also made of espressos and layers of steamed and foamed milk, the proportions are equal. As a result, the coffee will be more pronounced in a cappuccino than a latte. This drink is typically served hot.
