If someone is just getting eyeglasses for the first time, they may have a lot of questions. Medical specialists in the optometry field get asked many of the same ones on a frequent basis. Here’s some information your clients may want to know if they need postoperative or other specialty eyewear.

An Eyeglasses Guide for the Average Client

Why do I need protective eyewear after surgery?

Explaining why your clients need to wear the right kind of glasses after surgery can improve compliance rates. After cataract surgery, there is a tiny incision in the eye that may open if your client touches or otherwise applies pressure to it. The protective glasses shield the patient from inadvertently touching the eye and reopening the cut.

Protective eyewear also reduces glare that can be overwhelming for sensitive eyes. Some patients may need to wear a patch until the day after surgery or longer.

Do I need to keep wearing sunglasses after surgery?

Even though intraocular lens implants from medical specialists now come with some degree of UV protection, clients should still expect to wear sunglasses routinely when outdoors. Recommend a product that provides comprehensive coverage against UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.

How do I keep my protective eyewear in good condition?

medical specialistsCare for protective eyewear is similar to care for regular eyeglasses. Scratch-resistant coatings and sturdy resin frames are the best ways to minimize the likelihood of damage. Spring hinges also make the glasses more flexible.

Make sure your clients understand that their glasses should be stored in a hard protective case when not in use and they should be cleaned with lint-free microfiber cloths or moistened wipes specifically designed for lenses.

Should I get reader glasses or prescription glasses?

Cataract surgery can reduce the need for glasses altogether. Still, some patients, particularly those who have monofocal intraocular lens, may need daily eyewear. Reading glasses make objects appear larger and are one-size-fits-all solutions for many individuals.

However, these glasses aren’t helpful for other eye conditions. Inform your patient that they must receive an eye exam to find the right solution for their needs.
