Keeping flowers and other house plants in your home is an ideal way to circulate air moisture, reduce stress, and help bring the outdoors in. To boost their longevity, proper maintenance is key. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts for caring for your house plants.

Do:

Provide adequate light.

Flowers and plants need the proper quality and intensity of light in order to carry out photosynthesis, the process by which they synthesize food. However, too much light can stress a plant, making it more prone to disease.

To strike the right balance, it’s best to put them in a well-lit room while avoiding direct exposure to sunlight. Generally, flowering plants will typically need between 12-16 hours of light per day, whereas foliage plants require 14-16 light hours daily.

Water them consistently.

flowersPlants will also need to be watered, and consistency is key. However, each plant is different, so the watering schedule will depend on the plant size, indoor temperature, humidity levels, and time of year. Ideally, you want to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Keep in mind that lush, thick-leaved plants will require more water than those with waxy leaves.

If you’re unsure whether your plant has enough water, test the soil by poking your finger in up to the knuckle. If the soil feels damp, the plant has enough water. Conversely, if it feels dry, it’s time for a watering.

Don’t:

Overwater them.

While consistent watering is essential, you don’t want to oversaturate your plant with too much water, as they can drown. If you notice the soil is dry, but you’re afraid of overwatering, you can always put some water on a plate underneath your plant so that it can drink as needed.

Move them too much.

Since plants take a bit of time to adjust to their surroundings, you’ll want to avoid moving them around too frequently. This can be especially problematic if you’re moving them from a hot room to a much colder one, or vice versa, as they’ll have difficulty adjusting to the drastic temperature change.
