The summer sun may make for pleasant weather, but its heat can spell trouble for your car. To drive with confidence this summer, catch up with auto maintenance now. These tips will help you avoid common issues that affect cars when the heat is on.

A Guide to Car Care in the Summer

1. Check the Battery

On average, expect your battery to last three to five years. Have an auto repair shop test it with a multimeter to gauge how much life it has left. If your car only starts after multiple attempts or if the check engine light is on, you may need a replacement.

In the heat, battery fluid evaporates faster and leads to corroded terminals and connections. During a tuneup, technicians will inspect the battery fluid level and clean any corrosive residue from clamps and posts with sandpaper.

Because excessive vibration is harmful, they’ll also verify that the battery is securely mounted.

2. Flush the Cooling System

Overheating is a leading cause of engine failures. Have the cooling system flushed on the service schedule recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

Keep an eye on the coolant level in the reserve tank throughout the summer. If it falls below the minimum mark, add coolant.

Also, check the hoses that circulate coolant between the engine and radiator. They should be replaced if they look dry and cracked or feel soft and squishy.

3. Inspect the Tires

Also, keep tires inflated to the pressure recommendation given in your owner’s manual. When the pavement is hot, underinflated tires are more likely to blow out.

4. Replace the Wiper Blades

To keep your windshield clean, replace the wiper blades if the rubber or silicone is cracked or loose. Blade edges should be clean and smooth. Wipers that smear glass and leave streaks impede your vision at night and when the summer sun is glaring.

5. Assess the AC

If the air coming out of the AC is warm, consult a service technician to improve its airflow and temperature. They’ll replace cabin air filters and the refrigerant if it’s low, so you can stay cool throughout the hot season.
