Cracked asphalt can be an eyesore and create safety hazards for people walking or driving on it. Distresses in the material will only worsen with time, so it’s important to know how to handle them. Understanding how they form will also help you prevent them, and you can get started by using the asphalt paving and repair guide below.

How to Fix Broken Asphalt

1. Alligator Cracks

Alligator cracks are the most recognizable and common. The asphalt splinters, crumbles, and eventually resembles alligator skin. This fatigue cracking begins below the paved surface and occurs when too much weight is placed on the asphalt. It can also be caused by expansion and contraction during cold weather.

asphalt pavingThese issues can be repaired by using crack filler on the affected areas. A sealcoat can then be applied over the surface to keep moisture out. Larger damage will require excavating the weakened asphalt, repouring into the cavity, and having asphalt paving professionals refinish the surface.

2. Linear Cracks

These long fractures result from too much weight of the surface, moisture penetration, erosion, and general weakening from everyday wear. They’ll become wider and extend as more weight is applied, and the base of the hardscape will begin to disintegrate. A contractor may apply a depth patch by removing the cracked area and installing a new slab with a powerful adhesive.

3. Block Cracks

Block cracks can be any size and are defined by block-like separation in the asphalt paving. They’re common during freeze/thaw cycles when the asphalt can’t constrict and expand.

These cracks will worsen when exposed to moisture and create an uneven surface that can be dangerous to walk on. Large blocks will need to be removed and replaced with an overlay, while smaller cracks can be fixed with a sealer.

4. Potholes

Potholes form when cracks expand and the support beneath a weakened area collapses. They create a safety hazard for pedestrians and motorists. Paving contractors can fix them by cleaning the hole and filling it with new asphalt.
