If you’re looking for a splash of color amongst your other houseplants, tropical flowers will make fantastic additions to your home with their bold hues and unique shapes. Below are three types of tropical flowers ideal for home growing.

3 Types of Tropical Plants to Beautify Your Home

1. Bromeliad

In their natural environment of shady, damp rainforests, bromeliads are inclined to grow on trees. Their family also contains Spanish moss, pineapples, and succulents that thrive in deserts.

While they’re natural tree-growers, they can easily adapt to home growing. However, they’ll need to be grown on a rock or section of a tree. Keep them in partial sunlight, and take care not to overwater.

2. Anthurium

flowersAnthuriums are instantly recognizable with their bright color, waxy spathes and cylindrical flowering spikes. Many people mistake the spathe, the red leaf that encloses the cylindrical spadix, for a flower, but its role is protective. The actual flowers are small and bloom on the spadix, which protrudes from the spathe.

Anthuriums prefer ample light without direct sunlight and rooms with high humidity, like the bathroom. However, the plant should only be watered once a week in the winter and, at most, twice a week in the summer.

3. Epiphyllum

Cousins to the bromeliads, epiphyllum are adapted to low-water conditions. They’re often referred to as cactus orchids.

An epiphyllum should be potted in a loose soil mix that allows for quick drainage. During the winter, only water it enough to prevent withering. Once the growing season begins, the plant should be watered once a week.
