Mold growth can be a blight on an otherwise attractive siding. It affects your home's curb appeal and can even lower property values. Because mold is so tenacious, power-washing your house one time may not be sufficient. Here are some tips to help you combat mold on your siding.

How to Keep Your Siding Mold-Free

1. Schedule Regular Power-washing

Power-washingMold spores are tiny organisms, invisible to the naked eye. If they find a damp, shady spot—such as under an eave with a leaky gutter—they'll set up camp and start to multiply.

Regular cleaning washes away spores and keeps mold growth at bay. It also removes accumulated dust, dirt streaks, and grass stains. For the best results, schedule power-washing once or twice a year.

2. Let in the Light

Mold cannot photosynthesize sunlight into nutrients like most plants can. Moreover, it has little defense against ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, sunlight is deadly to mold.

Take advantage of this by trimming back shrubs, overhanging tree branches, and vines from your house. Let the sun shine directly on the siding, and it will act as a natural disinfectant.

3. Install & Maintain Gutters

Mold needs shade and moisture to multiply. Thus, you can prevent mold growth on your siding by parching it of water.

Install gutters to collect rainwater and direct it away from the house. Otherwise, it will drip from the roof and run down the siding. Seal up any gutter leaks with caulk, and clean gutter troughs regularly to prevent them from clogging and overflowing.
