Summer heat and humidity mean increased use of your home’s air conditioner, which can cause your energy bills to skyrocket if you’re not careful. From regular AC maintenance to improving your home’s insulation, here are a few steps you can take to keep home cooling costs manageable all season long.

Do:

Check the placement of your thermostat.

When you set the thermostat to a specific temperature, your AC will kick on when the air temperature is out of its range. If your thermostat is in an area exposed to direct sunlight or another heat source, it will trigger the unit more than necessary. Moving your thermostat to another location will provide a more accurate reading of air temperature.

Find other ways to keep your home cool.

AC maintenanceA ceiling fan will circulate cooled air around your home, which allows the HVAC system to operate more efficiently. You can also hang curtains to block the sunlight from windows and help keep your interior cool.

Don’t:

Neglect regular AC maintenance.

The more efficiently your cooling system operates, the more money you can save, so it’s worthwhile to invest in routine maintenance. Changing the air filter every two to three months is particularly important. A clogged filter limits airflow, which can then cause the unit to work much harder.

Fail to maintain your home’s insulation.

Cracks around your doors and windows, along with gaps in the structure of your home, can easily allow air to escape and waste energy. Sealing up these areas will not only lower energy costs but also extend the life of your AC since it won’t need to work as hard to produce the same output.
