Hormonal contraceptives are effective, safe, and convenient methods of birth control. Among several potential health benefits, they can reduce the risk of unplanned pregnancy, regulate menstrual cycles, and improve acne. If you’ve recently been prescribed combination pills, here are some answers to a few questions you may have.

4 Questions About Oral Contraceptives

How long can I take them?

Most people can take birth control safely for years, as there is no medical evidence that suggests that healthy women need to stop taking them for any reason.

However, if you are over the age of 35 and a smoker, or have other risk factors of high blood pressure, your doctor may recommend you discontinue use eventually to reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol.

Do they cause side effects?

In general, birth control can improve skin condition, reduce cramps, regulate periods, decrease bleeding levels, cause mood swings, and lead to weight gain or loss.

Can I use them to stop my periods?

Most packs consist of 21 days of active pills and seven days of inactive pills that contain iron. You menstruate during the fourth week. If you take only active pills, you don’t experience bleeding. Consult your doctor before trying this method.

Extended-cycle pills are alternatives that extend your cycle, allowing you to reduce your periods to a few times a year. You can even eliminate periods altogether with continuous dosing.

What if I miss a pill?

You must take your pill every day for it to be effective. If you only miss one, take it as soon as you remember. If you don’t remember until the next day, take two.

If you miss more than two pills, however, use another form of contraception, such as condoms, to prevent unintended pregnancy until you finish the pack.
