Hot weather conditions and long road trips during the summer make a car more susceptible to blowouts and engine failure. As such, perform some auto maintenance before heading out on long drives this season. Here are a few steps to take to keep your vehicle running at peak performance.

How to Maintain Your Car This Summer

1. Check Fluid Levels

Engine failure due to overheating is a common cause of breakdowns during summer. Engine oil keeps the engine’s internal components lubricated to prevent excess friction, which can cause overheating. Coolant removes the heat produced through the radiator.

Have an auto maintenance technician check that the coolant and engine oil are at the correct levels and replenish them if needed. While you’re at it, ask them to top up the transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid to ensure proper lubrication throughout.

2. Monitor the Tire Pressure

Temperature affects tire pressure. For every 10-degree rise in temperature, pressure increases by 1 to 2 pounds per square inch (psi).

3. Check the AC

A broken AC can make driving uncomfortable.

Run the AC for a few minutes before a long trip to check if it cools down the car. If it blows warm air, you may need to clean the air filter or top up the refrigerant. If the problem persists, the condenser or condenser lines may need repairs.
