A pool table offers endless fun for you and your family. If there comes a time when you must place your pool table in a self-storage facility, it’s important to take the right steps. Even minor damage to the table can render it unusable, but these tips walk you through each part of the storage process.

Selecting a Self-Storage Facility

Not all self-storage facilities offer the same level of services. When looking for a place to put your pool table, make sure the facility you choose offers climate-controlled units. High heat, humidity, and moisture can damage components of the table, including the wood and felt. For example, extreme fluctuations in temperature can cause the rubber rails to harden and crack. Additionally, excess moisture in a storage unit may lead to the wood warping.

Taking Apart Your Pool Table

Once you’ve found suitable storage, the next step is to break down your table. This is a very delicate process, as you don’t want to damage any of the individual components while you’re disassembling them. Remove pockets, rails, felt, and slate (which you will need help with, as it can weigh hundreds of pounds). Slate can be brittle, so it should be removed carefully from the table to prevent breaking. It’s also a good idea to wear gloves to protect your hands and enlist help from a friend. Once these components are removed, flip the table over and remove the legs.

Packing Your Pool Table

Individual components should be wrapped separately in protective packaging. Cushion wrap can protect smaller items, but larger pieces should be wrapped in large, puffy blankets if available. When it comes to the slate, lay down heavy-duty sheeting on the floor and place the slate on top of it. If there is more than one piece of slate, this sheeting should be layered between them. Slate should be placed horizontally during transport and when kept in the storage facility to prevent it from breaking. Felt can be folded neatly and packed in a sealed bag to avoid damage. Clearly mark all the wrapped pieces of the pool table with a permanent marker so they can be easily retrieved and put back together.
