Beyond illuminating rooms, chandeliers serve as focal points to add a dramatic effect to interiors. Dust, dirt, and additional gunk can collect in the nooks and crannies. To help your investment maintain its luster, below are cleaning tricks to try and other practices to avoid.

Do:

Disassemble removable pieces.

If you take apart all removable pieces first, the chandelier will be much easier to clean. This eliminates the risk of pendants, prisms, crystals, and other fragile components falling and breaking while you work.

chandelierTake a picture of the fixture beforehand and draw a diagram of where each part goes. This information can be used as a guide to reassemble the chandelier later. Take note of any lightbulbs that need to be replaced and damage that needs to be repaired, too.

Wash by hand.

Use a microfiber cloth soaked in a solution of water and mild detergent to clean the various pieces. Without using too much pressure, go over the canopies, scrolls, chains, and additional elements. Afterward, rinse off the surfaces with water and wipe away the moisture with a dry microfiber towel.

Don’t:

Clean on sunny days.

If the chandelier is near a window or in the direct path of sunlight, wait until an overcast day to clean the fixture. Otherwise, heat from the sun will cause water to dry on the chandelier before you get a chance to wipe it off. Rapid drying can leave streaks and spots behind.

Twist the main body or attachments.

When cleaning parts of the chandelier that can’t be disassembled, don’t twist the fixture to access different areas. This increases the risk that the canopies and chains securing the main body to the ceiling will break. To avoid damage, move around the fixture to clean the sections.
