When your AC is blowing hot air, the inside of your house can quickly become unbearable, especially during a blistering Ohio summer. Fortunately, some common causes of this frustrating problem are relatively easy to fix, while others may require professional air conditioner repairs. Below are a few reasons your AC might be heating, rather than cooling, the home.

Why Does an Air Conditioner Blow Hot Air?

1. Incorrect Thermostat Settings

Before calling for air conditioner repairs, make sure the thermostat is on the right setting. Someone may accidentally bump it to “heat,” or you might have set it to “on” instead of “auto.” When the thermostat is in the “on” position, the fan will bring hot air from outside, whether the AC is running or not.

2. Blocked Airflow

When the system doesn’t get enough air, the condenser coils or compressor can freeze, which causes hot wind to blow from the vents. This happens because the coils usually cool the air, but will malfunction when frozen. Changing the filter and cleaning off the coils may help, although you should wait until the unit thaws to see results.

3. Low Refrigerant

Air conditioners are closed systems, but tiny pinholes and cracks can allow refrigerant to leak out over time. While this fluid is colorless and odorless, you can spot it if you find the grass dying around your outside unit. If you have an indoor air conditioner, you will notice stains on the wall nearby. Having an air conditioner repair expert recharge the system and check for leaks allows your AC to blow cold air again.
