Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure, but your work doesn’t end after the movers unload your boxes and furniture. While you don’t have to unpack everything at once, there are some tasks you’ll want to take care of right away. The following items should be done on day one.

Top 3 Activities You Must Do After Moving In

1. Locate the Fuse Box & Water Main

For your safety, verify the location of the fuse box and water shutoff valve for your home. Whether you encounter a tripped circuit breaker or an unexpected leak, knowing where these features are can help you avoid significant property damage.

2. Confirm That Utilities Are Set Up

movingYou should have begun the process of transferring utilities or getting them turned on before you moved in, but now is the time to check that this took place. If the electricity or water hasn’t been turned on, have someone from your utility company come over as quickly as possible.

You’ll also want to set up the internet. Depending on your property and internet provider, you may be able to do this on your own, or you might need a technician to visit.

3. Unpack Essential Items

It’s normal to be exhausted after moving day, but at least get started unpacking. Clearly labeling boxes with essential items will allow you to get out necessities like toiletries and a change of clothes.

After that, consider which rooms you’ll want to use first. Whether that means unpacking the kitchen or the home office, prioritize the area that you will need up and running the soonest.
