Driveway paving can make a big difference for your property’s accessibility and curb appeal. However, before contractors can start pouring the asphalt, the ground must be prepared. The following are key parts of the preparatory process that ensure a lasting result.

How to Prepare for Driveway Paving

1. Check for Adequate Slope

The driveway’s slope should direct water toward the road, rather than letting it pool on the surface or even accumulate near your home’s foundation. This can contribute to potholes and cracks in the driveway, as well as foundation cracks and basement leaks in the home. If you don't naturally have the correct slope, the soil will need to be graded to prevent future problems.

2. Eliminate Tree Roots & Weeds

pavingWeeds and tree roots can create significant long-term problems for your driveway. Weeds can break through the asphalt and weaken the base layer, and growing tree roots can cause the driveway to buckle and crack. Additionally, dead, rotted tree roots can cause problems by contributing to soil compaction, which will compromise the driveway's structural integrity. All such plant life should be completely removed before additional work begins.

3. Install a Gravel Layer

Before laying the asphalt, your contractors will install a gravel base. This thick layer of crushed gravel will give the driveway the strength needed to support your vehicles. If it isn't thick enough, the asphalt surface will deteriorate quickly. Paving should be completed shortly after this step to reduce the risk of a severe rainstorm washing away the gravel.
